"The designer J Abercromby liked to start his courses with a par 3, and this is a particularly impressive example. At nearly 200 yards, and sloping gently uphill, it takes a very well struck long iron to reach the green. To the right the land falls off sharply all the way to the hole, while a line of bunkers running diagonally across the fairway will catch anything under hit. The green itself slopes from back to front, and is very firm and slick (like all the greens at Knole), so a par at the first is a very fine score indeed."
